Delhi Murder Case: Expansion And Effects Of Web Series

The award-winning American drama crime series Dexter, OTT Platforms, and the Effects Of Web Series have found themselves at the center of the Delhi murder case after the arrested accused, Aaftaab Poonawala, 28, told police that the show inspired him to hack and dispose of, of his partner’s body.

Poonawala is accused of murdering his 27-year-old live-in partner Shraddha Walkar in May. The accused admitted to police that he intended to “silence her,” but instead strangled Walkar.

Poonawala allegedly hacked Walkar’s body and stored the parts in small black poly bags, inspired by the show’s main character, Dexter Morgan, played by Michael C. Hall, who is shown to have homicidal tendencies.

Dexter is a forensic technician at the fictional Miami Metro Police Department in the show. While Dexter is solving crimes in the morning, he is also a vigilante serial killer, hunting down and killing murderers who have not been adequately punished by the justice system.

Dexter’s method, at least for the majority of Season 1, involves dismembering his victims and placing the dismembered parts inside black garbage bags. He then transports these bags in his vehicle before loading them onto his boat.

Dexter would dump the bags into an oceanic trench after adding rocks to weigh them down and sealing them with duct tape.

Poonawala told police he bought a new fridge to store Walkar’s body parts after dismembering him. Over the next two to three months, he made several trips to the Mehrauli forest area, emptying the bags full of dismembered body parts.

According to police sources, he removed the intestines first so that they could decompose easily.

Similar Incidents Inspired by Web Series

This is not the first time that web series has gained notoriety for being linked to a murder. Mark Andrew Twitchell, a Canadian filmmaker, was convicted in April 2011 of first-degree murder in the death of a 38-year-old man.

Twitchell lured the victim into a garage in 2008, bludgeoned him, and dismembered him. Twitchell dumped the parts into garbage bags and dumped them into a storm sewer after partially burning them.

Several media outlets dubbed Twitchell the Dexter Killer after the court noted his identification with the character of Dexter Morgan during the trial. Twitchell had even recreated a ‘kill room,’ which was part of the fictional character’s preparation for a forensic-free murder.

Similarly, in 2014, an American teenager obsessed with the show’s protagonist was sentenced to 25 years in prison for murdering and dismembering his 17-year-old girlfriend.

Similarly, Shamrez Khan, 28, hired Håvard Nyfløt in 2011 to murder Faiza Ashraf, a Norwegian-Pakistani woman. Håvard Nyfløt  claimed that after being inspired by Dexter, he wanted to kill Khan in front of Faiza in order to “stop evil.”

What is OTT?

OTT stands for Over-the-Top. This handy term describes the new method of delivering film and television content over the internet whenever we want, across a variety of devices, without the need for traditional broadcast, cable, or satellite pay-TV providers.

In layman’s terms, OTT streaming means paying an internet provider, such as Xfinity, for internet access to watch Netflix without having to pay for cable TV.

The Binge-Watching Culture

It is becoming clear that traditional television viewing is losing popularity among youth. Famous web series platforms such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Sony LIV, and other video streaming websites offer instant access to a wide range of video content, attracting young people in India.

Over the last decade, India has witnessed a technologically transformative media landscape that has pushed niche channels, content, and television technologies into the mass market.

The introduction of new platforms for engaging with television media, primarily smartphones and Internet TV/Video-On-Demand (VOD) and OTT web series platforms, has resulted in shifting viewing patterns and platform preferences.

Moving forward, Web series platforms capitalized on a large audience that has grown accustomed to consuming entertainment content via smartphones. Online streaming platforms have now swooped in to seize a piece of the market.

This online video streaming differs significantly from traditional television in terms of content, features, and context. It is still difficult to determine how far traditional media theories and methodologies can inform research on changing audiences and their viewing habits.

It should be noted that Hotstar, launched in 2015 and owned by Star TV (India’s largest private broadcaster), is the most popular among web series platforms in India, with a total loyal user base of 75 million people in rural and urban areas, followed by Amazon Prime Video with 11 million subscribers.

While Netflix ranks third with around 5 million subscribers, it nonetheless provides a more interesting focus of investigation due to its many differences from other players and the more specific audiences it targets – affluent, English-speaking urban youth
