After its launch, the robust new telescope carried out a variety of tasks, including scanning the atmospheres of nearby exoplanets for potential biosignatures or chemicals like oxygen and methane, whose simultaneous presence in a world’s atmosphere would strongly suggest life.

The Giant Magellan Telescope, Extremely Large Telescope, and Thirty Metre Telescope will all be located above Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano if the telescope team and the local community can reach an agreement.
