Sextortion Scam: Delhi Cyber Police Arrests 5 Online Scam Accused From Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh
Delhi Cyber Police busted a Sextortion Scam. Five men were arrested on suspicion of extorting money from a businessman under the guise of blocking the victim’s obscene video on social media.
Delhi Cyber Police Arrested 4 Rajasthan and 1 Uttar Pradesh Resident
The accused have been identified as Khurshid Khan (31), Raman (42), Kaluram (33), Vikram Jatav (24), all Rajasthan residents, and Murari (42), an Uttar Pradesh resident.
According to Delhi Cyber police, a businessman filed a complaint alleging that he received a phone call from a person posing as inspector Vikram Rathore of the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch and was extorted money on the pretext of blocking the complainant’s obscene video on social media.
The victim stated that he had received a video call from a girl on WhatsApp who began an obscene video chat with him before the extortion began.
Later, the scammer called the complainant and said that the girl who had called him had committed suicide in Rajasthan, and the situation had become complicated. A murder case would be filed against the victim as well.
The main conspirator is Raman. Khurshid and Murari would withdraw money from various ATMs and hand it over to Raman after keeping their commission. Raman had previously been involved in a similar type of crime in Punjab, according to Singh.
Money, Card and ATM Recovered from Sextortion Scam Gang
Jatav and Kaluram agreed to open bank accounts in order to receive the extorted money. Police recovered one car, Rs 1,40,000 in cash, 15 ATM cards, and four mobile phones from their possession.
The gang members had also withdrawn Rs 4 crore from ATMs from various bank accounts in the previous six months.
Evolution of Sextortion Scams
Sextortion was first reported in 2006, when a female journalist living in a studio apartment in a typical Mumbai neighbourhood and used to online chatting was the target of a spear-phishing attack.
On the victim’s laptop, a malicious programme known as the video keylogger virus was then installed. As a result, everything she typed was saved on her laptop’s hard drive and sent to the cybercriminal via email.
After her Webcam was accidentally turned on, all of her photographs were inadvertently transmitted. The meticulously compiled recordings and data were used to blackmail the unwary victim. The girl had to go through counselling after attempting suicide.
The following are some tips for avoiding sextortion scams:
- To avoid falling victim to such scams, it is advised that people exercise caution when accepting friend requests from anonymous users.
- To use the privacy safeguards offered by social networking sites to prevent information from being misused.
- It should be reported and reported to the appropriate website online. The first step is to file a FIR with the Cyber Crime Wing of the Police Department.
- If the person on the other side is trying to get closer, it is best to be cautious.
- Never post or allow others to see or record anything private or intimate online.
