Paul Krueger Dateline: a homeless gambler who friended people on dating sites using a fake identity is arrested for bilking around $100, 000. The shocking part is Paul Krueger never met any of his victims face to face. All he has done is first earn the trust of his victims and later offer them a business opportunity in music records with great returns.
One of his victims, Noelle said, “I think I just felt he was looking out for my best interests. I trusted him, and I believed him”.
Nicole, a singer from Michigan, said, ‘I had established a friendship three years prior, so it was almost like he was more than a best friend. It was almost like [dealing with] an uncle”.
Dating sites have become a place of romantic scams. Even social media is not immune from it. Many people either fall into the greed trap, like in the case of Paul Krueger or become victim of sextortion (fear trap).
Paul is alleged to have lured women to invest in his music record business. He used to tell his prey that he was a graduate of the University of Miami with a degree in music technology and became a Grammy-nominated record producer.

Victims said that they found Paul to be genuine and credible. Scammers are also sweet talkers, even if somebody is extra sweet without any reason and showing interest in anyone then there are high chance that he wants something from him.
One of Paul’s victims is a singer and he approached her on her website and said ‘they had much in common’. With this a friendship started and three years later he asked her for money.
“He approached me,” she said. “And I believed him. He was frank.”
After learning about Paul Krueger’s Scam she was shocked and said, he is a ‘master manipulator’. Krueger approached many of its victims via dating apps especially those who are aspiring singers.
“He was going to invest the money in more aggressive stock options that would give me a better return than what I was getting myself,” she said. “I thought he was someone who was my friend.”

Dating scams are not new, many scammers are hunting people. They mainly use two emotions to fool anyone. One is fear, and the second is greed. Either they extort money out of victims via sextortion. Where scammers use the fear of people to extract enormous amounts of money from them.
Another way is to earn people’s trust and show them money by offering business opportunities or high-return investment schemes. Being a human it is our deepest desire to earn money. People lean towards the lucrative deals available to them and try to grab the opportunities present in front of them.
Never trust anyone on the internet no matter how long you have been in contact. Cyberspace has become the hunting ground for scammers.
