Like And Earn Scam: Mumbai Woman Lost Rs 10 Lakhs to Online Scam
Mumbai: As the government continues to crack down on various Digital and online scams, a Mumbai-based woman recently lost Rs 10 lakhs after falling for a Like and earn scam offer she saw on social media.
Modus Operandi of Like and Earn Scam
Like many Indians, the 49-year-old housewife was asked to like some YouTube videos in order to earn money. The woman followed the instructions to earn some quick money and was later asked to invest some money to get more such tasks.
According to reports, the Like and earn scam victim had discovered the scheme online and was asked to like some YouTube videos. According to the site, she would receive Rs 50 for each like.
The Like and earn scam victim stated that she could earn a few thousand rupees at first, which made her confident in the plan; however, she was later asked to invest 10 Lakhs under the scheme to get more such tasks and continue earning money.
Similar Online scam Case from Mumbai
Earlier this month, a 40-year-old Sangvi woman lost Rs1.71 lakh to cyber crooks who promised her high returns on investment. She transferred the funds online, but when she did not receive the returns, she filed a police report at Sangvi Police Station.
They first gave the woman money and then told her she could earn more by investing. The woman transferred Rs1.71 lakh via a link but discovered she had been duped when the crooks deleted the link.
How to Avoid an Online Scam
- Unwanted phone calls and text messages should be blocked. Take steps to filter and block unwanted calls and text messages.
- Don’t provide personal or financial information in response to an unexpected request. Honest organisations will not call, email, or text you asking for personal information such as your Social Security number, bank account number, or credit card number.
- Even if you receive an email or text message from a company with which you do business and believe it is legitimate, it is still best not to click on any links. Instead, contact them through a reputable website. Look up for their phone number.
- Know how scammers tell you to pay. Never pay someone who insists you pay with cryptocurrency, a wire transfer service like Western Union or MoneyGram, or a gift card. And never deposit a check and send money back to someone.
- Stop and talk to someone you trust. Before you do anything else, tell someone — a friend, a family member, a neighbour — what happened. Talking about it could help you realize it’s a scam.
