Kerala Online Fraud: Mangaluru Man Lost Rs 18 Lakhs
According to a complaint filed at the cyber, economics, and narcotics crime (CEN) police station here, a man from Mangaluru fell victim to online fraud and lost Rs 18.43 lakh through digital transactions.
Modus Operandi of Online Fraud
In December of last year, the man received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number with information about making quick money through digital marketing. He joined the telegram channel established by the number.
The stranger requested that the man register himself on a website via the channel that was sent to him. As a result, the online fraud victim registered himself, paid Rs 9,000 on December 18, and received his money promptly.
Later, the stranger asked the victim to send money at different intervals, and the data on the website showed that the money had been doubled. The victim sent a total of Rs 18.43 lakh in various transactions after believing the message.
When the man later tried to get his money back, the stranger demanded that he pay him again. He then refused to send more money and asked for the amount he had invested, which elicited no response, according to the complaint.
According to the sources, the police have registered a case for online fraud and are conducting an investigation.
