Cybercrime: Uttar Pradesh Saw 3 Lakh Cases In 3 Years
According to Prof. Triveni Singh, IPS, superintendent of police for the cybercrime cell in Lucknow, there have been 3 lakh reported cybercrime cases in Uttar Pradesh over the past three years.
Data from 2022 shows that cybercrime has increased in India by 63%, with Uttar Pradesh trailing only Karnataka in the number of cyberfrauds committed.
The elderly are the most vulnerable in these cases, which are frequently carried out through social media sites like Facebook and WhatsApp, though children are also falling victim to them.
Criminals con young people by promising them jobs and bank loans, but they also con the elderly by tricking them into paying their bills through a link.
Many instances of people being conned by scanning a QR code on OLX (an online marketplace) when they post a sale advertisement there are being reported in UP.
Another way that people are being made to pay is through sextortion, in which a perpetrator pretends to be a girl on social media, he claimed.
After making friends with weak individuals (usually men), they request that they make a video call and record it, which they then edit and use to create inappropriate videos. If the men refuse to pay, they threaten to post the videos on social media.
Hackers and fraudsters use a variety of methods to harm their victims’ reputations, finances, businesses, and other aspects of their lives. Having a cybercrime attorney by your side can give you legal leverage if you suffer from any of the types of cybercrime that are prevalent in India.
Cybercrime In India
Cybercrime is any illegal activity carried out via electronic devices online. In India, there are several provisions in the Information and Technology (IT) Act, 2000, that deal with cybercrimes. The gadget might be the intended victim or a tool to carry out criminal activity elsewhere.
Attacks committed as part of cybercrime may be directed at people, businesses, or even governments. The technically proficient cybercriminals use other devices to cause damage, for financial gain, or for other purposes.
Types Of Cybercrime Attacks
Knowing the targets of such online attacks is important before moving on to the other ten types of cybercrime. People frequently believe that because they don’t have any confidential information, cyber attacks won’t have much of an impact on them.
However, in the high-tech era when bank accounts can be accessed online, everyone is in possession of a lot of information whose loss could cause serious issues. The types of cybercrime attacks on the source that have an impact on users are listed below:
1. Fraudulent Financial Activity
Giving someone else access to your account number, one-time password (OTP), or any other sensitive information is inviting fraudsters to drain your bank account in the world of online banking.
Someone sitting far away from you can hack your website and disrupt its smooth operation. This has an impact on the services offered through such websites or, in any case, the brand that has been developed over time.
3. Stealing Personal Data
The original owner becomes vulnerable socially and financially when someone steals personal information like usernames, passwords, OTP, PIN codes, personal pictures, or videos.
4. Using A Device For Illegal Purposes
Anyone with access to your devices is free to engage in any illegal activity. If you are being followed, the authorities will be able to identify you because these activities use links that point back to the original users while some hacker operates far away.
Types of Cybercrime
The types of cybercrimes that have affected internet users in India are listed below. These incidents are frequent. Understanding the context can be aided by reading up on the various types of cybercrime with examples.
1. Denial of Service (DoS)
There are numerous websites that offer their customers services online. The services will be affected if there are issues with the website’s proper operation. Denial of service (DoS) operates in this manner.
Fraudsters flood the website with more visitors, disrupting online networks and the services as a result. The attack may occasionally be distributed using numerous compromised computer systems, in which case it is known as a distributed denial of service attack (DDoS).
2. Identity Theft
As the name of the crime suggests, identity theft occurs when a different person impersonates the original user. Users’ personal information is stolen by online criminals and used fraudulently.
Someone recently reported receiving an email from her boss asking for a sizeable sum to be transferred into a client’s account on social media. She transferred the money without getting confirmation, becoming a victim of identity theft that resulted in financial fraud. This is a prime illustration of identity theft.
3. Phishing
Phishing is the practise of sending spam emails to users that lure them into opening the email by including malicious URLs or attachments. By deceiving users or organisations, this act aims to obtain their personal information.
While some of them may be red-flagged, the majority do not display any outward signs of being fake. The user may suffer financial loss as a result of compromised credentials and data loss.
Social engineering is the term used to describe malicious online behaviour that has a personal touch. To trick the users into sharing private information, they impersonate an official on the phone and use psychological manipulation techniques.
When someone calls the users and claims to be a bank representative, asking them to share the one-time password they received on their mobile to protect their financial interests or bank accounts, etc., is a common way that credit card fraud is committed in India.
4. Ransomware
Ransom money is requested when someone illegally seizes a person or piece of property in order to threaten another and demands financial compensation in exchange for preserving those rights.
Ransomware is one of the different types of cybercrime that occurs when thieves steal your private or confidential information and threaten to use or delete it unless users send a certain amount to protect or access it.
Cybercriminals typically extort users by locking their data and demanding cryptocurrency transfers.
4. Web Jacking
Businesses were enticed to create their own websites by digital marketing, which has become the new norm. More website visitors suggest that more people are aware of the company’s products, services, and brand.
But what if someone else uses malware to steal all of the traffic from your website? Among the more serious forms of cybercrime, this is how webjacking operates.
It might be accomplished by using malicious methods to gain administrator access to the URL, tampering with the Domain Name System (DNS), and then sending users to another website.
5. Botnets
Botnets are controlled by a remote group of outside hackers and are made up of compromised computer devices. It turns into a tool for these hackers to attack other devices or function as malware to carry out illicit activities online.
6. Cyberstalking
Cyberstalking occurs when someone follows another person on social media, websites, or search engines and then bombards them with messages or emails threatening their safety.
In extreme cases, cyberstalking can result in “sextortion,” in which the victim is threatened for sharing private photos or videos in exchange for cash or sexual advances. Cyberbullying, which may pose a long-term threat to victims’ mental and physical health, can arise from cyberstalking.
7. Prohibited Material
Scammers distribute inappropriate material or information that users find offensive. Sexual activity, child pornography, violent images and videos, and more are all examples of such prohibited content.
9. Malware Attacks
People who use smartphones with an internet connection may occasionally have their whereabouts, internet searches, usernames, and passwords captured by webcams, among other information, tracked.
Due to app permissions, it may occasionally be lawful and informed, but it may also occur without the user’s knowledge and pose a serious risk to sensitive data.
Malware attacks are such ignorant activities on devices that may sneak personal information resulting in larger financial frauds or other threatening acts. Individuals, large organisations, or even government agencies could be the targets.
How Can Cybercrime Be Prevented?
Knowing the different types of cybercrime and how to prevent them is crucial for users of internet services. Anyone with access to a person, organization, or government’s website should be on the lookout for any suspicious activity.
Following are some tips for users on how to avoid cybercrime and safeguard their personal data:
- Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to protect private information.
- Never make use of the same password across multiple platforms.
- Do not click on any URLs or attachments in spam emails.
- Never click on links with an unknown source.
- In the case of shady emails or messages, get in touch with the source directly.
- Keep track of the balance and transactions in your bank account.
- When someone malicious approaches you online, file a cybercrime complaint right away.
- Always use antivirus software and keep your internet-connected devices updated.
- Set up web browsing filters to only access trustworthy websites.
- Use secure passwords, and change them frequently.
- Maintain OS (operating system) updates.
- Use the most recent software/applications.
Final Note
The internet is very much like life. It is fascinating, and we spend a lot of time here having fun, but it is not without its share of difficulties. With the development of technology and widespread ease of access to the Internet, cybercrime has also increased in frequency.
There are many ways that we can fall victim to illegal cyber activities, from breaking into computers to carrying out fraudulent online transactions. The Information Technology Act, 2000, was put in place by the Indian government to control such actions that infringe on an Internet user’s rights.
