The state GST department discovered the Aadhar card scam with a new method in which 1,500 Aadhaar cards were illegally used to generate bogus GST registration numbers in the last eight months.

Gujrat Aadhar Card Scam

On February 7, the state GST department conducted spot verification of suspected firms, including those in Surat, Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad, Anand, and Rajkot, to combat bogus billing.

During operations in Surat, it was discovered that duplicate documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards were created using an Android mobile application in this Aadhar card Scam.

An Aadhaar card holder in Surat with a Palitana residential address was unaware of the GST registration and PAN number obtained in their name by changing the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar.

Modus Operandi of Aadhar Card Scam

“Many residents claimed that in the name of government assistance, the Aadhar Card Scammers took them to various Aadhaar centres in Palitana and their thumb impressions were taken,” said the GST department.

The GST department conducted search operations in Palitana and seized mobile phones, laptop computers, and other digital devices from the Aadhaar centres.

More than 2,700 GST registrations were obtained across India, according to further verification of 470 registrations obtained from modified mobile numbers in Aadhaar cards.  There is a good chance that many of these GST registrations are fraudulent.

The verification of 75 Surat-based companies found that 61 of them were engaged in phoney billing practises. 12 out of the 24 verified firms in Ahmedabad were found to be operating illegally.

How to Avoid Aadhar Card Scams?

  • Stay away from unknown links. If you get any suspicious SMS, email, or social media messages about the Aadhar card, proceed with caution. Avoid giving any information if you aren’t certain who sent the message.
  • Never divulge private information to unreliable sources. Remember that giving out personal information over the phone to anyone is not secure. Not even your bank, including card details, login details, passwords, and bank account information.
  • To prevent the aadhar card scam, Don’t pay attention to requests for unauthorised KYC update calls or messages; a bank will never send you an unauthorised link to update your aadhar card.
  • For Any Changes in the Aadhar Card, visit only the government-approved Aadhar Card Centre. The Aadhar Official Website has a list of nearby Jan Suvidha Kendra according to your Region.
